Abstract

Imec USA’s research site at NeoCity Florida centers on system development for advanced AI and 6G as the largest and fastest growing semiconductor applications. It brings together two critical technologies unified by the novel advanced packaging capabilities being developed at NeoCity: superconducting digital (SCD) AI systems and heterogenous RF communication systems for 6G. Enabled by new materials and processes, these technologies break through scaling walls in compute and communication, providing a sustainable path for bringing AI capabilities to the edge. For edge computing, it focusses on superconducting digital (SCD), a beyond-CMOS digital technology aiming for sustainable scaling of advanced AI and HPC hardware. SCD promises compute at greatly reduced cost, form factor, and power consumption due to unprecedented power efficiency, computational density, and interconnect bandwidth. RF interposer technology with imec advanced packaging will also unlock 6G, enabling ultra-high-speed, reliable communication at mm-wave and sub-THz frequencies. RF interposers provide the foundation for the communication between mobile edge AI agents as well as enabling true telepresence, holographic communication, and immersive virtual reality for metaverse applications with unparalleled efficiency and scalability.
