Biography

Peter Ossieur received the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Ghent University, Belgium in 2000, and the PhD degree in electrical engineering from the same university in 2005. From 2005 till 2009 he was a postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University, after which he joined Tyndall National Institute, where he became senior staff researcher. His research interests included electronic integrated circuit design and optical transmission systems. In 2017, he joined imec-IDlab, an imec embedded group at Ghent University. Today, he is director for XTCO Fabric and Optical Interconnect at imec, and holds a parttime appointment as professor at Ghent University. Peter Ossieur is a member of the ISSCC wireline subcommittee.

From photonic devices to the interconnect fabric: enabling AI training clusters through integrated photonics and advanced assembly

Business as usual scaling of compute for AI will soon hit bandwidth and latency walls, whereby processing units will sit idle while waiting for new data to process. At least part of these bottlenecks can be addressed through deployment of optics deep into these compute systems.

This talk highlights imec’s integrated photonic device roadmap, and shows how it can be combined with advanced assembly technology to realize optical interconnect with ultra-high bandwidths and low energy consumption. The same technology platform can also be used to remove latency bottlenecks from today’s AI training clusters.
